2026 Update:

Small businesses have more leverage than ever. AI tools have matured - the $20/month price point has become standard for flagship models across Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini.

But the real shift is in capability. These aren’t just chat tools anymore. They’re agents that can write code, browse the web, generate images, and execute multi-step tasks autonomously.

The biggest unlock for small businesses? Coding agents like Claude Code. You don’t need to be a developer to build custom tools, landing pages, and automation anymore. Describe what you want, the agent builds it. This changes everything.

Small businesses can now access tools that used to require full teams.

These are the tools I actually use. Not everything on the market - just what works for growing your business.

AI Chat Tools

This is your foundation. Everything starts here.

A good AI assistant handles research, copywriting, analysis, code generation, and brainstorming. Pick one, learn it deeply, then expand.

Claude (My Primary Recommendation)

Claude - Anthropic’s AI assistant. This is what I use for 90% of my work.

Why Claude over ChatGPT?

• Better at following complex instructions
• Less likely to refuse marketing-related requests
• Handles longer documents and context
• More consistent output quality
• Claude Code for terminal-based agent work

Current plans:

• Free - Access to Claude Sonnet 4.6 and Haiku 4.5, about 30-100 messages per day
• Pro ($20/month) - 5x more usage than free, Claude Code access, file creation, code execution, unlimited projects
• Max ($100-200/month) - 5x to 20x Pro usage, priority access, persistent memory, early access to new features

The Pro plan is the sweet spot for most marketers. Max is overkill unless you’re doing heavy development work.

Use it for: Market research, ad copy, landing page copy, email sequences, competitive analysis, data interpretation, code generation.

ChatGPT

ChatGPT - OpenAI’s assistant. Still useful, especially for image generation.

Strengths: Web browsing, native GPT-5 image generation, wide plugin ecosystem.

Current plans:

• Free - Access to GPT-5 with limits
• Plus ($20/month) - Higher limits, GPT-5 series access with advanced reasoning, priority during peak times
• Pro ($200/month) - Highest limits, advanced reasoning capabilities
• Go ($8/month) - New global tier with GPT-5.2 Instant access

The image generation angle: In March 2025, OpenAI replaced DALL-E 3 with native GPT-4o image generation. It’s noticeably better. Plus users get about 50 images per 3-hour rolling window.

Use it for: Research with web browsing, quick image generation, tasks where you need specific plugins.

Google Gemini

Gemini - Google’s AI. Now called “Google AI Pro” after the I/O 2025 rebrand.

Current plans:

• Free - Access to Gemini with generous limits
• Google AI Pro ($19.99/month) - Gemini 3 Pro access, 2TB storage, priority access
• Google AI Ultra - 30TB storage, Veo 3.1 video generation, Deep Think, Gemini Agent

Students get Google AI Pro free for one year (sign up by January 31, 2026).

The Workspace angle: If you have a Google Workspace business account (Business or Enterprise), Gemini AI is now included at no extra cost. You get Gemini in the side panel of Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive, and Chat. Plus “Help me write” in Gmail and Docs. No add-on purchase required anymore.

If you’re already paying for business Gmail, you’re sitting on AI features you might not be using.

Nano Banana Pro: Google’s image generation model that went viral. Over 1 billion images generated in under two months. It’s built into Gemini - select “Create images” and choose the “Thinking” model. Photorealistic output, great text rendering, and the “3D figurine” style that took over social media. Useful for quick ad creative mockups and social content.

Use it for: Quick questions, Workspace integrations, NotebookLM for research, image generation with Nano Banana Pro.

Grok

Grok - xAI’s assistant with real-time X (Twitter) integration.

Why Grok is different:

Grok taps into real-time data from X. This makes it genuinely useful for market research, trend spotting, and understanding what people are actually saying right now.

Want to know what people think about a competitor’s product launch? What complaints are trending in your niche? What language your audience uses? Grok pulls live context that other AI tools can’t access.

Current plans:

• Free (limited) - Access to Grok 3, no guaranteed availability, capped queries
• X Premium+ ($16/month) - Full Grok access, integrated into X
• SuperGrok ($30-40/month) - Higher limits, Grok 4 access
• SuperGrok Heavy ($300/month) - Maximum capability for power users

The catch: You can’t buy Grok separately from X. If you’re not active on the platform, it’s less useful.

Use it for: Market research, trend analysis, competitor monitoring, understanding real-time sentiment, finding content angles based on what’s actually resonating.

AI Coding Agents

This is where it gets interesting.

Chat interfaces are great for brainstorming and copy. But if you want to actually build things - landing pages, tracking scripts, automation workflows, custom tools - you need coding agents.

These tools work directly in your terminal. They read your codebase, make changes across multiple files, run commands, and handle the tedious parts of development. You describe what you want, they build it.

Claude Code

Claude Code - Anthropic’s terminal-based coding agent. This is what I use to build and maintain this site.

Why it’s a game-changer:

• Works directly in your terminal and IDE (VS Code, Cursor, JetBrains)
• Understands your entire codebase without manual context selection
• Creates files, runs commands, manages git operations
• Coordinates multi-file changes with approval at each step
• Long-term project memory - remembers architectural decisions across sessions

Access:

• Included with Claude Pro ($20/month)
• Higher limits with Claude Max ($100-200/month)
• Team Premium seats ($150/person/month) for business use

Install: npm install -g @anthropic-ai/claude-code

Use it for: Building landing pages, creating tracking scripts, setting up automation, maintaining Hugo/Grav sites, any development work where you want AI doing the heavy lifting.

OpenAI Codex

Codex - OpenAI’s coding agent. Open source, built in Rust, runs locally.

Key features:

• Full-screen terminal UI for conversational coding
• Session resume - pick up where you left off
• Image inputs - paste screenshots or design specs
• Built-in code review before commits
• Web search integration (opt-in)
• Sandboxed by default for security
• Cloud integration for remote execution

Models: Defaults to GPT-5-Codex. GPT-5.2-Codex adds better handling of large refactors, migrations, and long-horizon work.

Use it for: Similar to Claude Code. Try both and see which fits your workflow. Some people prefer Codex’s full-screen UI, others prefer Claude Code’s IDE integration.

The real power: Combine these with your marketing stack. Need a custom tracking script? A landing page variant generator? A tool that pulls competitor data and formats it for analysis? These agents build it for you.

Image Generation

Stop paying designers for ad creative. Generate variations, test them, let data decide.

Midjourney

Midjourney - Best quality for marketing images.

No longer runs through Discord only - they have a web interface now.

Current plans:

• Basic ($10/month, $8 annual) - 3.3 Fast Hours (~200 generations)
• Standard ($30/month, $24 annual) - 15 Fast Hours + unlimited Relax mode
• Pro ($60/month, $48 annual) - 30 Fast Hours, Stealth Mode, 12 concurrent jobs
• Mega ($120/month, $96 annual) - 60 Fast Hours, unlimited everything

No free trial. Standard plan is the sweet spot for most marketers - unlimited Relax mode means you can generate endlessly if you don’t mind waiting.

Use it for: Hero images, ad creative, social media visuals, product mockups.

ChatGPT Image Generation

Built into ChatGPT. In March 2025, OpenAI replaced DALL-E 3 with native GPT-4o image generation, which has since evolved into GPT-5’s native image capabilities.

The upgrade is significant. Better photorealism, more accurate text rendering, faster iteration.

Plus users get about 50 images per 3-hour rolling window. Free users get 2-3 per day.

DALL-E 3 is still available through the “DALL-E GPT” for those who prefer the older style.

Ideogram

Ideogram - Best at text in images. Dominates text rendering.

When you need text overlays that actually look good, this is the tool. Version 3.0 (March 2025) brought major improvements in photorealism and lighting.

Current plans:

• Free - 10 credits per week (resets Saturdays)
• Basic ($7/month) - Entry-level access
• Plus ($15/month) - More credits, faster rendering
• Pro ($42/month) - Priority rendering, commercial rights, team features

Use it for: Text-heavy ad creative, social posts with quotes, any image where readable text matters.

Tracking & Analytics

The foundation of everything. Without tracking, you’re guessing.

Cookie deprecation, privacy regulations, and platform restrictions have changed everything. First-party data is more valuable than ever.

Plausible

Plausible - Privacy-focused analytics that actually respects your visitors.

Why I switched from GA4 for some sites:

• No cookies required (GDPR compliant out of the box)
• Lightweight script (under 1KB vs GA4’s 45KB+)
• Simple dashboard that shows what matters
• You own your data
• No sampling issues

The tradeoff: Less granular than GA4. But for most marketing sites, you don’t need 200 reports - you need to know what’s working.

Pricing starts at $9/month for up to 10k pageviews. Scales up to $169/month for 10 million pageviews. Covers up to 50 websites with unlimited data retention and unlimited team members. Two months free if you pay yearly.

They offer a 30-day unlimited trial - no credit card required.

Use it for: Content sites, landing pages, blogs where you want clean data without the bloat.

Google Analytics 4

Free. Still useful for e-commerce and complex funnels where you need event tracking depth.

Set up conversion tracking properly. Use it alongside dedicated click tracking for full visibility.

Server-Side Tracking

If you’re running significant volume, server-side tracking is no longer optional. Platform pixels miss 20-40% of conversions due to ad blockers and browser restrictions.

Tools like Stape, Elevar, or custom GTM server containers solve this.

Hosting

Your hosting affects everything: page speed, tracking reliability, uptime.

Stop using $3/month shared hosting. The money you “save” costs you in lost conversions and wasted ad spend.

Namehero

Namehero - I run most of my sites here.

I know the team personally. The support actually understands hosting (not reading from a script).

Start with: Standard hosting or Reseller if you’re just getting started.

Upgrade to: VPS when you need more performance.

Cloudflare

Free tier handles CDN, basic security, and performance optimization. No reason not to use it.

The paid plans add more features, but free handles most use cases.

Email Marketing

Your email list is an asset you own. Unlike paid traffic, it doesn’t disappear when you stop paying.

Kit (formerly ConvertKit)

Kit - My primary recommendation for creators and marketers. They rebranded from ConvertKit in 2024.

Why Kit:

• Subscribers count once (not per list like other platforms)
• Visual automation builder that actually works
• Good deliverability
• Free migration from other platforms

Current plans:

• Newsletter (Free) - Up to 10,000 subscribers, unlimited emails, forms, landing pages (one automation only)
• Creator ($39+/month) - Unlimited automations and sequences, scales with subscriber count
• Creator Pro ($59+/month) - Facebook custom audiences, referral system, subscriber scoring, deliverability reporting

Heads up: They raised prices significantly in September 2025. Some users saw bills increase up to 4x. Still competitive, but do the math for your list size.

Beehiiv

Beehiiv - Worth considering if you’re building a newsletter-first business.

Why I like it:

• No email limits - pay by subscribers only
• Keep 100% of your earnings (no platform cut)
• Built-in ad network connects you with brands
• Better monetization tools than Kit

Current plans:

• Launch (Free) - Up to 2,500 subscribers, unlimited sends, 3 publications, custom domain
• Scale ($43+/month) - Paid subscriptions, ad network, Boosts, automations, referral program
• Max ($99+/month) - Remove branding, priority support, up to 10 publications

The catch: Free plan can’t use monetization features. But if you’re serious about making money from newsletters, the Scale plan pays for itself.

Beehiiv becomes cheaper than Kit once you hit 10,000+ subscribers.

Funnel & Landing Page Tools

You need to build pages fast. AI handles the copy - you need tools that handle the rest.

ConvertFlow

ConvertFlow - Landing pages, popups, and personalization.

The power is in the targeting. Show different CTAs based on visitor behavior. Progress people through your funnel automatically.

Works with ConvertKit and most other tools.

Webflow / Framer

For more complex builds. Both support custom code, which matters when you want AI-generated components.

Carrd

Simple one-page sites. $19/year. Perfect for MVPs and quick tests.

Website & CMS

For building actual websites - not just landing pages.

Hugo

Hugo - Static site generator. This site runs on Hugo.

Why Hugo:

• Blazing fast (builds in milliseconds)
• No database, no security vulnerabilities
• Free hosting on Netlify, Cloudflare Pages, or GitHub Pages
• Markdown-based content (easy to write, easy to version control)
• Works perfectly with AI-generated content

The workflow: Write content in markdown (or have AI generate it), Hugo builds static HTML, deploy anywhere.

Learning curve: Steeper than WordPress initially. But once you understand templates, it’s faster for everything.

Use it for: Blogs, content sites, documentation, marketing sites where speed matters.

Pro tip: Pair Hugo with Claude Code for rapid site development. AI can generate content, templates, and even help debug Hugo’s templating language.

Grav

Grav - Flat-file CMS with an admin panel. The middle ground between Hugo and WordPress.

Why Grav:

• No database required (flat-file architecture = fast)
• Built-in admin panel for non-technical users
• Zero installation - extract ZIP and you’re running
• Git-friendly for version control
• Package manager for plugins and themes
• Multi-language support out of the box

The difference from Hugo: Grav has an admin interface. Your clients or team members can edit content without touching code. Hugo requires markdown files and command line builds.

The difference from WordPress: No database means faster performance, easier backups, and fewer security vulnerabilities. But smaller plugin ecosystem.

Pricing: Core CMS is free and open source. Grav Premium offers additional plugins and themes for purchase.

Use it for: Client sites where they need to edit content, blogs, documentation sites, any project where you want flat-file speed with a visual editor.

WordPress

Still the default for most people. Massive ecosystem of themes and plugins.

The downside: Slow, security issues, hosting costs add up, constant updates.

Use it for: Client sites where they need to edit content themselves, e-commerce with WooCommerce, sites that need specific plugins.

Ghost

Clean publishing platform. Better performance than WordPress, simpler than Hugo.

Good middle ground if you want something managed but not bloated.

AI Workflow Tools

Beyond chat interfaces, these tools help you build automated systems.

Make (formerly Integromat)

Make - Connect your tools. Trigger workflows. Automate the boring parts.

Example: New form submission -> Add to CRM -> Send Slack notification -> Trigger email sequence -> Log to spreadsheet.

Current plans:

• Free - 1,000 operations/month, 2 active scenarios, 15-minute intervals
• Core ($10.59/month, $9 annual) - 10,000 operations, unlimited scenarios, 1-minute intervals
• Pro ($18.82/month, $16 annual) - 10,000 operations, premium apps, full-text execution search

How operations work: Every action a module performs counts as one operation. Fetching data, sending, transforming - everything counts.

The sweet spot: Agencies and SMBs building 5-15 step automations. Pricing is competitive under 50k operations monthly.

Zapier

Similar to Make, sometimes easier for simple automations. More expensive at scale.

Use Zapier when you need a quick two-step automation. Use Make when you’re building something complex.

n8n

n8n - Self-hosted alternative with unlimited executions on the free tier.

The deal: Unlike Make and Zapier that charge per operation, n8n charges per workflow execution. A 50-step workflow counts as one execution. Predictable billing.

Current options:

• Community Edition (Self-hosted, Free) - Unlimited executions, you pay only hosting (~$5-10/month for VPS)
• Cloud Starter ($20/month) - 2,500 executions, hosted by n8n
• Cloud Pro ($50/month) - 10,000 executions
• Self-hosted Business ($800/month) - 40,000 executions, SSO, Git integration, license key required

The November 2025 pricing update added a paywall to features like SSO and Git that teams expected to get for free. If you’re just automating personal projects, the free Community Edition still works great. For business use, do the math.

Realistic self-hosting costs: Running production n8n often runs $100-200/month when you factor in managed Postgres, SSL, queue setup, and maintenance time.

The Stack I Actually Use

If you’re starting fresh, here’s what I’d set up:

Total minimum: ~$130/month + hosting

That’s a full marketing operation stack for less than what agencies charge per hour.

Budget alternative: Use Claude Free, ChatGPT for images, Plausible, Hugo on Cloudflare Pages (free), Kit free tier, Make free tier. You can run a real operation for under $20/month while you’re getting started.

What’s NOT on This List

A few things I’ve tested and don’t recommend:

• AI writing tools that aren’t chat-based - Most are just wrappers around GPT with worse interfaces. The major chat tools are better and cheaper.
• “All-in-one” marketing platforms - Usually do everything poorly instead of one thing well
• Cheap trackers - If you can’t trust the data, you can’t optimize
